Facts & Questions about LM-79

IES LM-79

What does LM-79 mean?

LM-79 is the Illuminating Engineering Society North America (IESNA) approved testing method to generate electrical and optical measurements of solid state lighting (LED) products. It was first used in the US Energy Star program in 2008 and has since become the international standard method for integrated LED & OLED products.

What’s included in an LM-79 test?
  • total luminous flux (i.e. lumen emitted by the luminaire)
  • effective electric power (i.e. W)
  • luminous efficacy (i.e. lm/W)
  • luminous intensity distribution (LID) via Eulumdat file (“your_lamp_type.ldt”)
  • the spectral power distribution of the emitted light and relevant calculated colorimetric / radiometric values like the following
       - correlated colour temperature (i.e. CCT in Kelvin)
       - CIE 1931 x,y chromaticity coordinates
       - Colour Rendering Indices (CRI) CIE 13.3 (Ra) and IES TM-30 (Rf, Rg )
       - In case of horticulture devices the photosynthetically active radiation (PAR) are given:
           - PPF in µmol/s
           - PPF efficiency in µmol/s/W
  • uncertainty values of the above parameters
What is the validity of the LightingLab LM-79 test report?

LightingLab is accredited according to IEC EN 17025:2018 and has an ILAC/MRA license. Test reports are valid worldwide, available in English, German and Hungarian.

What are the optional measurements for an LM-79 test?
  • power analysis (reactive power [VAr], apparent power [VA], ITHD, UTHD) at nominal input voltage
  • power analysis (reactive power [VAr], apparent power [VA], ITHD, UTHD) at variable input voltage (190 V - 260 V)
  • lamp stabilization function (drop of output flux from switching on to photometric stabilization according to EN 13032
If I bring my luminaire personally to the lab...
  • how long do I have to wait for the result?
  • how long do I need to leave my luminaire at the lab?
    • normal option means 5 working days, fast (72 hours) and express service (24 hours) also available
What is the price of the service?

Price depends on

  • quantity of luminaires to be tested arriving at the same time,
  • total number of luminaires that have been tested for the partner,
  • selected deadline option (normal, 72h, 24h),
  • selected optional measurements.

Facts & Questions about Luminance Meter Calibration

Luminance meter calibration

What kind of luminance meters can be calibrated?
  • spot luminance meters
  • imaging luminance meters
  • luminance meter function of a digital camera
What happens during the calibration?

Luminance levels according to the partner's request (between 1 cd/m2 and 4000 cd/m2) are generated with the help of a luminance generator. Your luminance meter is compared (on the principle of substitution) to the primary standard luminance meter of LightingLab. Difference at the luminance level is published in absolute value and percent value. If an adjustment option is available, it will be performed.

Can I get qualification for the instrument?

Yes, qualification is available on request if customer specifies the criteria of a relevant standard or factory specification or other.

What is the validity of the LightingLab calibration certificate?

LightingLab is accredited according to IEC EN 17025:2018 and has an ILAC/MRA licence. Calibration certificates are valid worldwide, available in English, German and Hungarian.
Calibration interval is usually defined by the customer's quality control system.

What is the uncertainty of luminance meter calibration at LightingLab?

Uncertainty budget is well defined, uncertainty of calibration for luminance meters: 5.6%.

If I bring my luminance meter personally to the lab....
  • how long do I have to wait for the calibration certificate?
    • normal option means five working days, fast (72 hours) and express service (24 hours) is also available
What is the price of the service?

Price depends on

  • quantity of luminance meters to be tested at the same time,
  • total number of luminance meters that have been calibrated for the partner,
  • number of calibration scale points between 1 cd/m2 and 4000 cd/m2,
  • selected deadline option (normal, 72h, 24h).

Facts & Questions about Illuminance Meter Calibration

Iluminance meter calibration

What kind of illuminance meters can be calibrated?
  • illuminance meters with built-in measuring head
  • illuminance meters with external measuring heads
  • photometer heads with voltage or photocurrent output
What happens during the calibration?

Illuminance levels according to the partner's request (between 1 lx and 4000 lx) are generated with the help of a working lamp. Your illuminance meter is compared (on the principle of substitution) to the primary standard illuminance meter of LightingLab. Difference at the illuminance level is published in absolute value and percent value. If an adjustment option is available, it will be performed.
