Technical case scenario

UV detector ageing in a photobiological measurement system

An anonymised, representative calibration scenario illustrating common risks in professional optical measurements.

IndustryPhotobiological safety
Instrument typeUV spectroradiometer
Primary issueReduced sensitivity in the short-wavelength region
Service focusConfiguration-specific calibration

Challenge

Reduced sensitivity in the short-wavelength region.

The customer observed unstable UV-weighted results despite normal visible-range checks. The UV configuration and response were evaluated separately.

Why this matters

Calibration results are only useful when the measurand, instrument configuration and later application match. A valid certificate for the wrong configuration does not control measurement risk.

Technical approach

Review the previous certificate and current configuration.
Inspect optics, fibres, diffusers and interfaces.
Verify wavelength and agreed radiometric quantities.
Evaluate uncertainty for the requested configuration.
Document deviations and accessory identification.

Outcome and lesson

The case demonstrates why visible-range control data cannot automatically confirm UV performance. Configuration-specific calibration and intermediate UV checks were recommended.
